Before saying goodbye – how to finish a conversation

by | Jun 6, 2021 | conversation | 0 comments

Finishing a conversation can be difficult! We often don’t like to do it because it feels rather rude. This short blog post will give you some phrases that will help you to end a conversation politely.

If you’ve just noticed that it’s getting late, you might say:

  • ‘I’ve just seen the time. I’m afraid I have to go.’

Or perhaps,

  • ‘Gosh, it’s two o’clock. I’d better go.’

You might feel less rude if you follow this statement with the reason you have to leave, for example:

  • ‘I have a train to catch in half an hour.’
  • ‘I’m meeting Sophie in ten minutes.’
  • ‘I have to be at the station at two thirty.’

It’s nice to tell the other person that you have enjoyed seeing them. You can use phrases like these:

  • It was really nice seeing you!
  • It was good to see you!

If you met someone by accident, for example in the street, you can say:

  • It was really nice bumping into you!

Finally, you might like to finish by saying that you’d like to see someone again, for example:

  • We must meet up soon.
  • Give me a call when you have a moment.

We hope that helps you to finish a conversation in a way that feels natural and polite. For more conversational tips like this, see our blog Everything you need to know about conversation.
